GES Warns Against Unapproved Collection of Fees from BECE Candidates

The Regional Education Directorate of the Ghana Education Service (GES), based in Cape Coast, has issued a formal notice condemning the unauthorized collection of money from students registered for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). This directive, dated June 5, 2025, was prompted by reports indicating that some Heads of Basic Schools in the Central Region are demanding money from candidates, allegedly for distribution to examination supervisors and invigilators.

According to the Directorate, such actions are not only inappropriate but also breach official guidelines set by the Ministry of Education and the GES. The communication emphasized that engaging in these unauthorized practices may constitute a criminal offense and warned that the conduct undermines the integrity of the examination process.

Heads of Basic Schools who have either collected funds or instructed others to do so are ordered to halt these collections without delay. Moreover, any money already gathered for this purpose must be refunded in full to the affected students by Monday, June 9, 2025. The notice clearly stated that non-compliance would lead to serious administrative consequences.

Additionally, the Directorate highlighted that only individuals officially appointed as invigilators or supervisors are permitted within examination centers during the period of the BECE. Teachers who have not received official assignment should not be present in or around any of the centers.

To ensure adherence, the Regional Education Directorate is calling on all Metro, Municipal, and District Directors of Education to enforce this directive strictly and oversee the smooth operation of examination centers across the region.
