Ghana Health Service Orders Immediate End to Washroom Charges in Hospitals

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has taken a firm stance against the imposition of toilet fees within its health facilities. In a directive issued on April 16, 2025, addressed to all Regional Directors, the Service emphasized that charging patients and visitors for the use of washrooms is unacceptable.

According to the GHS, washrooms form a critical component of hospital infrastructure. They are intended to offer comfort to both patients and visitors—not serve as an avenue for financial exploitation. The directive stressed the importance of maintaining clean and comfortable washrooms at all times to reduce infection risks, boost the perception of quality care, and enhance overall patient satisfaction.

Regional Directors have been tasked with ensuring the immediate halt of this practice across all facilities under their jurisdiction. The GHS also warned that any head of a facility who fails to comply with the directive will face sanctions.

The memo concluded by instructing that the content be communicated clearly to all Heads of facilities for strict adherence.
