GES Shuts Down Nkwanta SHS After Student Fatally Shot During Exam

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially closed down Nkwanta Senior High School in the Oti Region following the tragic shooting of a male student during a mock examination.

The closure, which took effect on Friday, June 27, 2025, was prompted by rising tensions and tribal clashes in the area. The violence has caused widespread fear among students, especially after two female students were injured by gunfire on their way to school just a day before the incident.

The student’s death, reportedly the result of a stray bullet, has deeply shaken the school and the surrounding community. The alarming development spurred swift action from both educational and security authorities.

In an official memo, the Acting Regional Director of Education highlighted the worsening security situation and emphasized the need to protect the lives of both students and staff as the primary reason for the school’s temporary shutdown.
