The National Teaching Council (NTC) has introduced major reforms to the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE), replacing the old system with a new structure aimed at improving efficiency and fairness.
In the past, candidates were required to write the examination a year after completing their training. This has now been cancelled. The GTLE is currently integrated into the final-year examinations of teacher training institutions, allowing candidates to take the exam before graduating.
Previously, candidates were not permitted to write the GTLE in their own colleges or institutions of training. This rule has been removed, and candidates can now write the examination in their respective colleges or training institutions.
Under the old system, there was no practical or teaching practice component in the Pedagogy score, with the assessment based entirely on a 100% theoretical paper. The new system includes a practical teaching practice component, which contributes 30% of the Pedagogy score, while the theoretical Pedagogy paper makes up the remaining 70%.
